The Wild Orchid is a tiny floral design studio that specializes in wedding flowers and floral preservation. Located in Sebastopol CA and owned and operated by Jane Arnold since 2006.
Each floral frame is handmade and is a one-of-a-kind custom piece of art.
The flowers are preserved using a traditional flower press. Most flowers are deconstructed petal by petal, to help maintain brightness, then placed between layers of dry paper and cardboard until flowers are completely dry. Once the flowers are dried, they are reconstructed and glued back together.
The frames are made using the stained-glass method. This requires sheets of glass to be taped together using copper foil and soldered over for a permanent seal, creating the metal frame. A patina is used to for black and copper frames.
Floral preservation and framing are a slow process and requires a great deal of time. It has many steps, and pieces can take anywhere up to 12-18 weeks to complete.
